Members of the
Citizenship and Law Related Education Committee meet to discuss and plan
law education activities for West Virginia students and teachers. The committee
has organized several learning events throughout West Virginia for both
teachers and students to learn more about the legal system. The Youth Summits for local students have been held in
various parts of the state.
The Youth Summits
consist of students of different backgrounds discussing important legal topics.
The Summits give students a chance to discuss legal issues that are
specifically important to their age group. Also, the committee has held teacher
training sessions in cooperation with the local RESA. The training sessions
included local attorneys educating teachers about such issues as privacy,
search and seizure, and the Safe School Act.
Students have given the committee positive
feedback about the Youth Summits. "I became
aware of ideas and problems in the community." "I learned about views
of others and compared them with my own." ". . . my opinion was just
one in a million. But I can make a difference." "I learned how people
of different backgrounds feel about what can be done to help America's
youth."
